The Old Fools are back!
Last year, when Joe was twice rushed into Intensive Care and put on a life-support machine, everything changed.
The shock was profound and his recovery has been slow and arduous. Thank goodness, Joe is not one to give up, and he is now almost as strong as when the viruses attacked. Thank you so much to the many readers who have been in touch wishing him well.
Itโs been nine months since our last newsletter but writing has had to take a back seat. Usually it takes a year to write an Old Fools book but, the latest, Two Old Fools in Turmoil, has taken much longer.
However, Iโm on the last chapter and we hope to launch it in a couple of months.
I shall be sending out an Old Fools Updates newsletter this week, with photographs, family news, a recipe, free books and book recommendations as usual.
- Like to subscribe? You’ll see the Join Old Fools Updates sign-up box right at the bottom of this page.
So much has happened recently, both terrible and wonderful. I couldnโt even begin to sum it all up. So Iโll leave you with a picture of Lola, who, along with the grandchildren, is the best medicine any doctor could prescribe, and has kept us smiling through the most difficult times.
Here is Lola, wallowing in mud, her favourite way to cool off.
Do join me on Facebook to find out how we’re coping, day to day…

I’ve just finished reading the first 4 of your books. I started on the 2nd of January and finished yesterday!
Thank you so much for taking my mind off my strained back and the loss of my father on the 2nd of January.
I hope Joe makes a full recovery and look forward to reading book 5 when I return to civilisation, (we teach in China), in February.
8th January 2018 @ 11:01 pm
Hello Julie, and I’m so sorry for your loss. What a devastating start to 2018. I’m very pleased my books have helped take your mind off the loss of your father, and the strained back, too. Thanks for the good wishes, and I bet you have stories to tell about teaching in China! ๐

It’s been snowing for a few days in Ireland. In preparation we declared a national emergency, and named the cold front “Beast from the East” , renamed by some as ” Hysteria from Siberia”.
As a consequence of the forced rest I discovered on kindle , by chance, your first “old fools” book. I suspect it to be an extremely inaccurate discription of you both. I have now read all and contact you to say thanks and hope that all is well with you and those you love.
10th March 2018 @ 11:31 pm
Hello Kevin, we watched the news showing the snow – brrr! Hard to imagine here as we slap on the suntan lotion… Thanks for making contact and letting me know you enjoyed the books. We’re very well, thanks for asking. ๐

Hi Victoria, I’m so glad to hear Joe is much better now.
I have all your books, and have read them se real times. Now I listen to them on my Alexa ! Usually when I’m in the kitchen, washing up etc. Or painting the kitchen walls , which I’ve almost finished. Xxx
10th March 2018 @ 11:28 pm
Thank you, Lyn, and Alexa of course, and I’m glad I’ve been useful, haha! Hope your kitchen walls look good! ๐

I came across your Two Old Fools books on Amazon and I can’t tell you enough how much I enjoyed them. I’ve read everyone except the “Two Old Fools on a Camel”. It’s so refreshing to read about “real ” decent people and the day to day life of a village in Spain. I want to know what happens to all of them. Hope both you and Joe are doing well.
14th May 2018 @ 10:20 am
Thank you so much for your kind words, Kathy! So pleased you are enjoying the books. We’re doing great, thank you for asking. ๐
5th July 2018 @ 7:08 am
I have enjoyed reading your first book…..now to read the others! Spain is very special to me. I studied at the University of Valencia many many years ago….I have returned often…now with my husband. I love to read about folks who move to Spain and share their experiences. Wonderful country…and people!
In reading the above posts, I see that Joe has had quite a serious health scare. I do hope he is doing well now.
Best to you both,

Hi Victoria. I’ve read many of your books and loved them all. I hope Joe is continuing to do well, and you, the family and Lola too? We loved reading about your young life in Dorset as my Husband’s Father was born and raised in Dorchester too.
I’m re-subscribing to your Newsletter.
Best wishes to you both.
