A naughty boy
I wrote the play, Morgan and the Martians, for the classroom and for youth theatre groups. I wanted it to be fun, and to involve the entire class, or group, so that every child has a part to play and nobody is left out.
I know kids like naughty boys, so I created Morgan, who is very bad. And there had to be a sick-making goody-goody too, and Cynthia fits that bill. Add to the mix some Martians (Ibble, Bibble and Blop), some ridiculous adults and a cloak that makes one invisible, and the play was complete.
I’m so delighted that the Prague Youth Theatre have chosen Morgan and the Martians as their next Junior production. Thanks to their Artistic Director, Adam Stewart, and Facebook, I can keep up to date with their rehearsals.
These pictures show the first read-through and early rehearsals in progress.
I can’t help wondering… Which child has Adam cast as Morgan? Which little girl is goody-goody Cynthia? And what about Blop, the baby Martian?

Excerpt from Morgan and the Martians:
Kate: We can’t leave the baby in the dustbin!
Morgan: Why not? I hate being good. Being bad is much more fun. (thoughtfully) But nobody seems to notice when I’m naughty…
All children: His mother thinks he’s good but he’s bad as bad can be,
He hates soppy kittens and he’s always late for tea,
He makes faces at old ladies and stamps on little ants,
He hides his father’s car-keys and he’ll NEVER change his pants!Morgan: Nine years ago,
When I was born,
My mother said to Dad,
“We have a lovely baby boy,
A bonnie little lad.”
I didn’t like the sound of that,
In fact it made me mad,
So I decided there and then,
I wanted to be BAD!All children: Everyone thinks he’s good but he’s bad as bad can be,
He hates soppy kittens and he’s always late for tea,
He makes faces at old ladies and stamps on little ants,
He hides his father’s car-keys and he’ll NEVER change his pants!Morgan: As I grew up, I threw my food,
And broke all my new toys,
But no-one seemed to mind,
They said, “Boys will be boys.”
Of course this made me hopping mad,
It made me scream and curse, So I decided from that day,
My behaviour would be WORSE!

Prague Youth Theatre (PYT) are delighted to have found Morgan and the Martians and we’re very excited to be performing the play in June. Morgan and the Martians is a funny and engaging play and the themes really get children enthused. What child doesn’t like a bit of mischief, particularly at the expense of adults? The poem above is an excellent example of the humour in the play and the children and I are having a lot of fun rehearsing. This is a great play for schools and youth theatres for children aged 7 – 12 as there are lots of roles and the poems make the lines easy for young ones to learn. Keep up to date with our rehearsals on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PragueYouthTheatre
